What a way to start an entirely new year. I've seen some crazy things in my decades of covering vehicles of all shapes and sizes. But nothing, and I mean nothing, could have prepared me for the Yamaha Y/AI. This thing is a definition of the word "outlandish."

Yamaha has teamed up with Netflix to create a concept bike for an anime series called "Tokyo Override." I'm not an anime aficionado by any standard, but from what I gather, the show is set 100 years in the future where AI rules the roost and self-driving cars are as common as pigeons in a park. But amidst this technological utopia, there's a rebellious group of riders clinging to their old-school internal combustion engines. So - "Fast and Furious" meets "Blade Runner" on two wheels.

The Y/AI looks like it was designed by a committee of Salvador Dali, Elon Musk, and a particularly imaginative five-year-old. It's got spokeless, semi-transparent wheels that glow an eerie blue, like something out of "Tron." The powertrain is hidden away in a "bridge" connecting the two wheels, giving it a sleek, minimalist look. And the handlebars? They're attached to the front via sharp-looking winglets, because apparently, in the future, ergonomics are for wimps.

The Y/AI also sports a unique frame, which is about as practical as a chocolate teapot but looks undeniably cool. The dramatically short tail and the geometric, minimalist body, all add to the bike's sci-fi appeal. It literally is a cross between a stealth fighter and a praying mantis.

Is this all just a marketing gimmick to promote an anime series, then? Probably. But there's a kernel of truth hidden within this outlandish design. Yamaha is clearly hinting at the future of motorcycling, where AI plays a more prominent role. We're already seeing AI in cars, so it's only a matter of time before it takes over our two-wheeled companions.

Can you imagine a motorcycle that can anticipate your every move, adjust its suspension on the fly, and even warn you of potential dangers before you see them? That's apparently the promise of AI, and the Y/AI is a glimpse into that future. I'm dubious, to say the least, but in a spirit of journalistic curiosity, I'll give it all the benefit of the doubt I can muster.

Of course, there's a long way to go before we see AI-infused superbikes on our roads. Yamaha's current lineup is still firmly rooted in the present, with models like the retro TW200 still sporting halogen lights in 2024. Heck, even electric motorbikes are struggling to gain mainstream acceptance.

But that's the beauty of concept bikes. They're meant to push the boundaries, to challenge our preconceptions, and to make us dream of a future where anything is possible. Like it or not, one day we'll all be cruising around on glowing, AI-powered motorcycles, laughing at those old-fashioned petrol-powered relics.

Until then, we can marvel at the Y/AI. A two-wheeled reminder that the future of motorcycling is full of surprises. I wonder what will Yamaha come up with next? Maybe a bike that can teleport you to your destination? Or one that runs on unicorn tears?

Kudos to Yamaha for creating a thought-provoking concept bike. It's different, it's daring, and it's definitely not boring. It's curious enough to make me watch "Tokyo Override" and dream of a future where I can commute to work on a glowing, AI-powered steed. Just imagine the look on the faces of those poor souls stuck in their self-driving pods… Priceless.
