Ford Capri is Back, Baby! But is it a Mustang in Disguise?
The Ford Capri has risen from the ashes, and it's nothing like its fastback coupe predecessors. This time, it's an electric SUV with a coupe-ish silhouette, which essentially makes it a jacked-up sedan. Think of it as the offspring of a Polestar 2 and a Ford Mustang, if that union were even remotely possible. It's a quirky concoction, but hey, I'm not judging... yet.
This new modern Capri is a tad over 15 feet long, about 6 feet wide, and 5.3 feet tall, with a wheelbase of 9 feet. Sounds spacious, right? The base model, with a 282-horsepower rear-wheel drive, promises a 0-to-62 mph time of 6.4 seconds. Not too shabby for a grocery-getter, eh? Its 77-kWh battery supposedly offers a 390-mile range (WLTP cycle), and a quick 10-to-80 percent charge takes a mere 28 minutes.
If you crave more power (and who doesn't?), Ford offers a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive variant with 335 horses and a 5.3-second 0-to-62 mph time. But, as with all good things in life, there's a catch - the range dips to 368 miles. And let's not forget the weight, folks. This Capri tips the scales at a hefty 4,625 pounds for the base model and 4,828 pounds for the all-wheel drive. That's a lot of metal moving around!
Inside, you'll find a cabin eerily similar to the Ford Explorer EV, complete with a vertically oriented 14.6-inch touchscreen that magically slides up to reveal a secret storage compartment. It's like something out of a spy movie, but with less intrigue and more USB ports. The Capri offers a decent amount of cargo space, too. With the seats up, you have 20.1 cubic feet, and with the seats folded, you get a respectable 53.3 cubic feet. That's enough room for a whole lot of groceries, or maybe even a small petting zoo.
Now, as always - there's a kicker. This European-made electric Capri will set you back €51,950 (around $56,180) for the base model. That's a pretty penny for a car that's trying to be a Mustang, a sedan, and an SUV all at once. Go for the top-of-the-range AWD, and you are looking at a better part of $61,000. That works out at about $182 per each of its 335 horsepower, and when you look at the price this way, it makes it palatable. Just.
Overall, this new Capri is an interesting beast. It's a bold, if a little controversial, move by Ford to revive a beloved nameplate and slap it on an electric SUV. Will it be a hit? Time will tell. There's no doubt it's certainly going to turn heads, and that's half the battle won, isn't it?
The all-new Ford Capri, then. It's electric, it's quirky, and it's definitely not the classic Capri. That's progress for you, right? But that price made me wonder: is Ford getting too comfortable in Europe with all the Chinese EVs having tariffs slapped on them? We were promised affordable EVs, right? Maybe Ford missed the memo.
