Volvo EX30 Cross Country Gets Ready to Conquer The Gravel Driveway
You all know how much I love a good electric car. The silent whirring, the instant torque, the feeling like you're driving the future. But sometimes, just sometimes, I crave a little bit of adventure. A touch of the wild. A dash of "let's see if this thing can actually handle a dirt road." And that, my friends, is where the Volvo EX30 Cross Country comes in.
The Swedes are reviving the Cross Country name, making the little electric EX30 the sporty spice of the Volvo lineup. The usual recipe applies - take the regular EX30 and give it a bit of a makeover, a bit of a "roughing up," if you will. And the result is quite something - the EX30 gets a cooler, more adventurous sibling, the one who's always up for a weekend camping trip or a spontaneous detour down a forest path.
Volvo hasn't spilled all the tea just yet, but they've given us enough to get excited about. The EX30 Cross Country will be officially unveiled in the first week of February at a press event in Sweden. It is set to hit the streets (and the trails) by summer 2025 - and it's bringing some serious off-road vibes.
We're talking a black front and rear fascia, and some "Cross Country" badging, so everyone knows you're not just another city slicker. Extra inches for the suspension, and let's not forget those chunky tires. Okay, maybe they'll be a little less chunky on the production model, but still, you get the idea. This car is ready for anything.
Since this is a Cross Country version, we're expecting the EX30's twin-motor setup. That means all-wheel drive, baby! The regular EX30 Twin Motor Performance boasts a whopping 422 horsepower and a 69 kWh battery. That means the 0-62 mph sprint takes only 3.6 seconds, which is way faster than my morning coffee kicks in. Who doesn't love a little speed, even if it's just to outrun a squirrel in the woods?
Of course, with the lifted suspension and all-terrain tires, the Cross Country might not be quite as quick off the line. But we're not buying this car to win drag races. We're buying it to explore, to adventure, to experience the great outdoors in all its electric glory.
Here's a little history lesson for you. Volvo's XC-badged SUVs actually get their name from "Cross Country." But ironically, there's no current model with that trim level. The last time we saw it was on the old V40 hatchback and the V60 and V90 estates. My favorite always was the XC70 - this barge took my family on amazing adventures far off the beaten track, and got us out of a spot of snowy bother more times than I can count. So, the EX30 Cross Country is bringing back a classic.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. This is still a Volvo, after all. While it might be ready to tackle a dirt road or two, it's probably not going to be scaling any mountains anytime soon. It's more of a "soft-roader," perfect for those who want a little extra capability without sacrificing comfort or style.
The Volvo EX30 Cross Country. A little bit sporty, a little bit rugged, and a whole lot of electric. It's the perfect car for those who want to embrace the great outdoors without leaving their eco-conscious values behind. Can't wait to see it in real life!
