The Citroen Ami: Still Funky, Now with More Funk and New Eyes
Oh, là là! Today, we're jumping headfirst into the cute and quirky world of the Citroen Ami. You know, that adorable little electric car that looks like it just came straight out of a Lego movie.
Ami is in a league of its own. It's a little bit like the automotive equivalent of a pug – so ugly it's cute. And just when you thought it couldn't get any more peculiar, Citroen has gone and given it a mid-life makeover for 2025.
The revamped Ami debuted at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, and let me tell you, it's a sight to behold. The front and rear ends have been redesigned, the bumpers are beefier, and the headlights now look like they're staring right at you. I swear, those things could give a Pixar car a run for its money.
But the real pièce de résistance? Fake gills on the front right fender, a nod to the iconic Citroen 2CV. Because, you know, nothing says "aerodynamic" like a bunch of plastic stripes. And because the Ami is all about symmetry (not!), those same gills are mirrored on the rear left fender. It kinda looks as if someone designed it with a funhouse mirror in hand.
Before you get too excited, don't expect any major changes in the power department. It's still the same 8-horsepower electric motor and 5.5 kWh battery, which means you'll be zipping around town at a top speed of 28 mph. That's not much at all, but apparently enough for the busy streets of Paris.
Citroen also unveiled the Ami Buggy Vision concept at the Paris show. This is the Ami with its quirky charm cranked up to eleven. It's got a midnight blue paint job, a white roof, yellow-tinted headlights, and chunky tires that make it look like it's ready to tackle the Dakar Rally. Although it actually won't. But that's the whole point, I guess.
And because no concept car is complete without a gimmick, the Buggy Vision comes with a kite surfboard and a special compartment to store the kite sail. Because, you know, when you're cruising around in your tiny electric car, the first thing you want to do is hit the beach and catch some waves. Although, I bet that kite could pull the Ami a tad quicker than its whizzy 8-hp electric motor.
Will this beach-ready buggy ever see the light of day? Well, considering the success of the previous My Ami Buggy, I wouldn't be surprised if a slightly toned-down version eventually makes it to production.
So there it is. The Citroen Ami: still funky, now with more funk and fresh new eyes. It's not the fastest, it's definitely not the most practical, but it's certainly one of the most unique electric vehicles on the market. And in a world where cars are starting to look more and more alike, that's a breath of fresh air.
