Tata's Avinya X Concept: A Velar in Disguise? Or Just a Velar Wannabe?
Tata Motors has been busy cooking up something intriguing in their automotive oven. Say hello to the Avinya X Concept, a sleek electric SUV that, dare I say, bears a striking resemblance to a certain British luxury SUV. Yes, I'm talking about the Range Rover Velar. But before you accuse me of being overly critical, let me assure you that this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all.
Unveiled at Auto Expo 2025 in India, the Avinya X Concept is a preview of Tata's upcoming premium Avinya lineup. And guess what? It's built on Jaguar Land Rover's Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform. Remember that Tata owns JLR, so it's all in the family. This shared platform means the Avinya X benefits from JLR's expertise in electric drive units, battery packs, and all that electrifying jazz.
I think that Tata has managed to create an SUV that stands out from the crowd, even if it does have a hint of Velar in its DNA. The front end is particularly striking, with a large body-colored section where you'd typically find a grille. In a way, they decided to give the grille a day off and let the bodywork shine. Above this "grille-less" area sits a slim LED light bar, adding a touch of futuristic flair.
The side profile is where the Velar resemblance becomes more apparent. The Avinya X has a sleek silhouette with a sloping roofline, black and silver wheels, and hidden door handles for the rear passengers. It's all very stylish and aerodynamic. I just can't help but feel like I've seen it somewhere before.
Inside, the Avinya X Concept keeps things minimal but classy. A large infotainment screen dominates the dashboard, again reminiscent of recent JLR models. There's also a slim digital instrument cluster and plenty of soft-touch leather to keep you feeling pampered.
Tata claims the production version of the Avinya X will have a range of over 300 miles on a single charge. That's not too shabby, especially for an SUV of this size. It's also expected to feature advanced tech like vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-vehicle capabilities, because these days, everyone wants to power their house with their car.
Of course, being a concept car, the Avinya X is still a bit of a mystery. We don't know the exact power output, battery capacity, or price. But if Tata can deliver on its promises, the Avinya X could be a serious contender in the Indian premium electric SUV market.
Why would anyone buy a Tata when they could have a Range Rover? That's quite easy to answer. The Avinya X is likely to be more affordable than its British counterpart. Plus, it's got its own unique style, even if it does borrow a few cues from the Velar. Tata is a major player in the Indian automotive industry, so they know a thing or two about building cars.
The new Tata Avinya X Concept is a stylish and promising electric SUV that could give the Range Rover Velar a run for its money. Will it be a success? It has all the makings of it. Tata is making a brave statement with this new concept. Let's see how close the production version resembles the concept.
