The electric vehicle landscape is about as predictable as a British weather forecast. One minute it's sunny with promises of 300-mile ranges, the next you're stuck in a downpour with a car that needs a recharge every 100 miles. But Nyobolt, a feisty British outfit, claims to have cracked the code with their new electric sports car prototype.

This speedster, based on the svelte Lotus chassis (classic lightweight ballet dancer, not the more recent sumo wrestler), promises a 10-80% charge in under five minutes. That's definitely quicker than I can finish a pint. Nyobolt boasts this is twice as fast as most current EVs, and they're not wrong. But before you start planning your cross-country road trip, let's talk about the secret sauce - the battery.

This battery is a curious beast. It's a wee 35 kWh pack, which, to put it in perspective, is smaller than what you'd find in a Mini Cooper EV. This means the Nyobolt EV has a range of about 155 miles. That's barely enough to get you from London to Birmingham, and definitely not enough for a spontaneous jaunt to the Scottish Highlands.

Nyobolt, in a classic bit of British optimism, spins this as a positive. "Lightweight!" they cheer, "Quick to charge!" they exclaim. Well, of course it is, it's the size of a thimble! But they do claim their patented technology addresses the dreaded battery degradation issue, promising over 600,000 miles of use with minimal capacity loss. That's impressive, but so is the price tag on a Bugatti, and I don't see many of those on the road.

Speaking of performance, the Nyobolt EV, with its 350kW DC fast charging capability, weighs in at a scant 2,756 lbs. Designed in collaboration with Callum (yes, the same folks who penned the Skye, the futuristic dune buggy), it's a looker for sure. But will it ever see the light of day beyond the prototype stage? Nyobolt is tight-lipped on production plans, but they do say low-volume battery production could start within a year.

So, what's the verdict? Is the Nyobolt EV the future of electric sports cars? Well, it's certainly an intriguing concept. The quick charging time is what the world has been waiting for, but the limited range is a significant drawback. It's like having a Formula One car that needs a pitstop every few laps - thrilling, but not terribly practical. Can Nyobolt overcome these challenges and deliver a truly revolutionary EV? Only time can tell, so we have to wait and see.
