Flying Ferries? Saudi Arabia's NEOM Goes Futuristic with Electric Hydrofoils

Imagine gliding over the waves, but not in some fancy yacht. Oh no - instead you’re in a sleek, electric hydrofoil. Sounds awesome, doesn't it?

Candela, the Swedish company known for pushing the boundaries of electric boats, has just landed a massive deal to supply their futuristic Candela P-12 hydrofoils to NEOM, a mega-city under construction in Saudi Arabia. This place is nothing like any other city in this world; it's designed to be a sustainable utopia, and apparently. And the flying electric ferries are part of the plan.

The Candela P-12 is so much more than just any boat. Sailing it feels like being on a magic carpet ride on water. It lifts itself above the waves on underwater wings, reducing drag and energy consumption by as much as 95%. That's right, 95%! Imagine switching from a gas-guzzling SUV to a zippy electric scooter - and yet magically keeping all the extra space! Hydrofoiling is pure wizardry.

All those energy savings translate to some pretty impressive stats. The P-12 can hit a top speed of 25 knots (28.7 mph or 46.3 km/h), which is faster than most conventional ferries, and it can keep going for over 2 hours on a single charge. So, not only is it eco-friendly, but it's also fast and efficient.

Sure, the P-12 is fast, but it is efficient. It's also comfortable. The hydrofoils make for a smooth ride, even in choppy waters. Can you imagine gliding over the Red Sea, sipping your morning coffee, without feeling even a hint of seasickness? It's the kind of luxury you'd expect from a private jet, not a ferry.

Of course, being electric, the P-12 is also incredibly quiet. No more roaring engines or diesel fumes. Just the gentle hum of electric motors and the sound of the wind in your hair. It's the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of the Red Sea without disturbing marine life or your fellow passengers.

The first batch of these flying ferries (8 of them to be exact) is set to hit the water in 2025 and early 2026, and I, for one, can't wait to see them in action. They're a glimpse into the future of water travel, a future where sustainability and luxury go hand in hand. It's a future I'm excited to witness.

So, next time you're planning a trip to the Red Sea, forget about those old, clunky ferries. Get ready to experience the thrill of flying over the waves in a Candela P-12. It's a journey you won't forget.
